Antipsychotics Are Used To Treat Depression

A group of psychoactive drugs which are commonly used to treat depression is called as antipsychotics. They are also used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar depression. There are two types of antipsychotic drugs, they are typical and atypical. Typical are the older form of the antipsychotic drug, where as atypical are the new form of antipsychotic drug. Both types of medication block the receptors in the brain, neurotransmitters pathway.  Usage of antipsychotics results in the side effects.

Extra pyramidal reactions also occurs causing hypotension, lethargy, seizures, nightmares, tachycardia, impotence (might warrant treatment with Generic Brand name Tadalafil or Generic Brand name Sildenafil or other drugs that help with treating impotence), and hyperprolactnaemia. Antipsychotics also affect the person in his sensation. It reduces the feeling desire, pensive though, and motivation, atypical antipsychotics causes diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis. It may also cause pancreatitis. Gaining weight is one of the side effects of using atypical antipsychotics which are favorable for the diabetes mellitus to occur. A reduction in the number of white blood cells occurs due to the usage of clozapine, an antipsychotic.

 So the patients who are using this tablet should have a regular check up and maintain the number of white blood cells to should take any precautionary method. The typical antipsychotic causes the most serious side effect called tardive dyskinesia which shows symptoms of involuntary, purposeless movements of the face, legs, lips or the body. Now a day, the atypical antipsychotics are also known to causes the disorder. It is observed that when a patient is given a chronic treatment with antipsychotics, the structional level of the brain is affected. The volume of the basal ganglia and reduction in the volume of grey matter in the different areas gets affected. Use of both typical and atypical antipsychotic also causes death o f neurons in the cerebral cortex.
