Problems In Testosterone Synthesis Can Lead To ED

Testosterone is a male hormone responsible for the normal growth and development of male sex and reproductive organs including the penis, testicles, scrotum, prostrate and seminal vesicles. With the onset of puberty the secretion of testosterone increases dramatically.  The production is controlled by luteinizing hormone secreted by anterior pituitary gland.

The male hormone is needed for the proper development of male reproductive system. After the onset of puberty, the hormone makes the male reproductive system to work properly in the production of sperm and seminal fluid. It also initiates and maintains the sex characteristics like bone mass, fat distribution, muscle, hair pattern and voice modulation.

Sometimes there is low secretion of testosterone hormone leading to the condition called as Testosterone deficiency. The deficiency may present from birth or it may be acquired. Klinefelter’s syndrome is most common congenital effects. This condition is characterized by a presence of an extra X chromosome which results infertility, sparse facial and body hair, abnormal breast enlargement and small testes. Deficiency in luteinizing hormone releasing hormone and gonadotropin releasing hormone also leads to testosterone deficiency. Congenital disorders leads to absence of testes called anarchism and failure of the testicles to descend in to the scrotum called as cryptorchidism. Chemotherapy, damages occurred during surgery, glandular malformation, head trauma affecting hypothalamus, radiation therapy, testicular trauma and tumors of pituitary gland, hypothalamus or testicles are the acquired causes of testosterone deficiency.

Some of the symptoms of testosterone include erectile dysfunction, muscle weakness, loss of body hair, depression and other mood disorders.  The treatment method depends on the age and the duration and development of the disorder. Treatment method involves the hormonal replacement therapy in which hormone is administrated orally. The most common method is transdermal delivery in which the patch of testosterone hormone is administrated through the skin.
