Priapism - Treat It As An Emergency

The prolonged erection of the penis is called as priapism. It is a painful medical condition where the penis does not return to its flaccid state, despite the absence of stimulus both physically and psychologically. It is considered as an emergency and a proper treatment should be given. This may lead to tissue damage which results in the erectile dysfunction. Usually an erection occurs whenever there is a physical or psychological stimulation.

When the receptors in the brain cells receive the stimulus and a message is transmitted, the blood containing the message flows in to the penis, activating the erectile tissue. Sickle cell anemia is one of the most common causes of priapism. In sickle cell anemia, the blood cells are in the shape of a sickle and these structures may block the flow of blood out of the penis. Usage of antidepressants like fluxetine and buproprion also causes priapism. Anti anxiety medications and blood thinners may cause priapism.
