Hypothyroidism Might Induce ED In Men

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the there is a deficient production or secretion of thyroid hormone by thyroid glands. Since thyroxin is important for metabolism, low level of hormone will lead to poor metabolism. This is a more common disease present world wide.

There are two main causes for the prevalence of the condition. The first cause is because of the ongoing or previous history of inflammation of thyroid gland results in multiplication of cells in gland, making the gland to secrete fewer hormones. This is mainly a autoimmune disorder caused by our own body’s immune system. The other main cause is the medical treatments in which a portion of the thyroid gland is removed. There are only few cells are present, which does not produce enough hormone to meet the body’s requirement. Pituitary gets injured after a brain injury which leads to decrease in blood supply to the area resulting in decreased production of TSH by the pituitary gland. Certain medications given to treat hyperthyroidism may leads to hypothyroidism in some patients. Another common reason is low level of iodine in certain regions like mountainous areas which leads to hypothyroidism.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism include general weakness, fatigue, sudden increase in weight gain or difficulty in losing weight, dry hair, hair loss, cold intolerance, constipation depression, irritability, low memory level, irregular periods, frequent muscle cramps, swelling in legs and extremely drowsiness. Some patients have no symptoms or some will have combination one or more above mentioned symptoms.

During hypothyroidism, to meet body’s need for thyroid hormone, pituitary will do extra work to produce thyroid stimulating hormone, this sudden increase in thyroid stimulating hormone may cause thyroid gland to become increase in size leading to the formation of goiter. Hypothyroidism is simply controllable by taking small pills once a day.
