The principle of diet includes restricted carbohydrates, moderate protein intake, low fat and liberal intake of vitamins, minerals and fluids. The diet prescribed will ask you to concentrate on more starchy foods like bread, cereals and starchy vegetables. It was studied that instead of having 3 big meals have 5 to 6 frequent meals. In case of certain forms diabetes fruits are highly restricted. It is advisable to take a piece of fruit as a snack and can vegetables either raw or cooked for lunches and snacks. Avoid frequent intake of sweets and sugary foods. It doesn’t mean you should not totally take them out from the diet; it can be incorporated once or twice a week. Split the dessert to satisfy the sweet tooth.
Foods low in glycemic index will help to control raise in blood sugar. High glycemic index foods increases in blood glucose. Using exchange list will also helpful while planning diet for diabetes. Reducing foods rich in fat like butter, margarine. Choose foods rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats like nuts and seeds, canola oil, olive oil. Fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring are good sources of omega- 3 fatty acids, this helps in promoting heart health as well as good for diabetic patients. |
